Blood and Metal Review

Synopsis -

She's his last chance for redemption...if she doesn't kill him first.

Copilot of the Blood Hunter, Daisy is a newly-turned vampire, and she's hungry. Really hungry and it's interfering with her plans for revenge. Unfortunately, the only thing that can distract her from said hunger is sex...which is a problem when she can barely refrain from draining any man dry within moments. But old flame Fergal Cain might just be the sexy-assed solution to her problem.

Part human, part cyborg, and with a poison coursing through his system, Fergal's running out of time to find the scientist who has the cure. Unfortunately for him, the misfit crew of the Blood Hunter put a serious kink in his plans. And if the poison doesn't kill him, the hot little vamp he can't resist might do the honors herself...

5 BLOODY FANGS!
"From being green to sporting fangs, Daisy's life, or rather un-life, is anything but dull."

Review -

Nina Croft brings readers back on another starship ride on the Blood Hunter, and once again does not disappoint. Picture Star Trek, mixed with Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, mixed with Riley Jensen and a little bit of Kim Harrison's Hollow's thrown in, and you'll have a close image of this amazing series. The perfect dosage of sci-fi, paranormal, romance and non-stop thrills.

It's Daisy's turn in the spotlight as she loses her green and learns what it truly means to become a vampire. Hopefully without ripping the throats out of any of the crew. When happening upon an old fling from the past, she may have found to perfect solution by substituting her hunger for blood for a hunger of a different kind of lust. Problem? When she allows him entrance into more than just her bed it complicates matters, and may interfere with the crews plans of revenge against the Church. Particularly High Priest Hatcher, the man personally responsible for the deaths' of two crew members.

Fergal Cain is just your average insane reporter who happens to be part cyborg, and on his own since the age of twelve. His most current undercover story is finding the man who made him within six months, before he dies, or worst. And just when his plans to find him, Cain's plans are turned upside down as someone who seems all too familiar, only she has the wrong skin tone, walks back into his life and everything seems to get turned upside down. When Fergal learns of what the crew has planned for the Church, lets just say conflicting emotions doesn't even begin to describe his predicament.

This book should not, I repeat not, be read as a stand alone. In order to fully enjoy it, especially emotionally, readers should read the series in its entirety. A must read for any gender and lover of Paranormal and/or SciFi.

Review -

The perfect blend of science fiction, paranormal and romance, and enjoyable by any gender. The greatest books are the ones that make readers stop and think, what if? Nina Croft proves with each book in this series that she truly understands that concept. Creating a world after the earth has been destroyed, and showing that mankind still lives on, and survival of the fittest still applies.

High Priestess Alexia the entirety of her life living under the rule of others. While being doted upon hand and foot, she was also sequestered to a glamorous life of servitude. Told what to wear, how to talk, how to behave, more importantly, how to think. When she finally sees the opportunity to break free, even if only for a short while, she jumps on it, or rather in. Taken in by the Captain of El Cazador Alexia assumes a new role in life, as well as a new gender becoming Al the cabin boy. But good things must come to an end, as Al learns with bitter clarity as the Church learns of her whereabouts and demand her return.

An alpha werewolf without a pack to protect can be a very dangerous thing. Jon cannot forgive himself for the events that tore his pack apart. Becoming a lone wolf and an assassin seemed the only solution for him. But the moment he meets the "cabin boy" his world is turned on its axis as every instinct he has comes back online, no matter how much he tries to fight the pull. The wolf and the man may want the same thing, but the man is determined to resist.

One determined to live a full life in a short time, the other still running from the life he once lead. Together they can either be each others downfall, or salvation.

Full of non-stop action from beginning to end, plus a bonus scene at the end, the Blood Hunter series is a true must read. Both male and female lovers of sci-fi and paranormal alike will enjoy this read. Characters to love, characters to hate and characters to make you laugh. Not for the squeamish or faint of heart as there is violence, bloodshed and steamy, hot sex that will have you reaching for your lover and making them very happy. This is a re-publish, so for those who have already read it, here's your chance for an actual paperback, so that you may have both Jon and Rico right at your fingertips.

Break Out Review

Break Out by Nina Croft (ARC Review)
RePublished September 30, 2014 by St Martin's Press
Dark Desires/Blood Hunter Book 1
4.5 Intergalactic Fangs!

"For readers who love their Sci-Fi mixed with a major dose of Paranormal."

Synopsis -

Break Out by Nina Croft

The year is 3048, Earth is no longer habitable, and man has fled to the stars where they’ve discovered the secret of immortality—Meridian. Unfortunately, the radioactive mineral is exorbitantly expensive and only available to a select few. A new class comprised of the super rich and immortal soon evolves. The Collective, as they’re called, rule the universe.

Two-thousand-year-old Ricardo Sanchez, vampire and rogue pilot of the space cruiser, El Cazador, can’t resist two things: gorgeous women and impossible jobs. When beautiful Skylar Rossaria approaches him to break a prisoner out of the Collective’s maximum security prison on Trakis One, Rico jumps at the chance. Being hunted by the Collective has never been so dangerous–or so fun! (Goodreads)

Review -

Once again Nina Croft has delivered a great story and leaves readers anticipating more. From page one, the action begins and doesn't let up until the very end. Readers will board the El Cazador de Sangre and fall in love with every member of the crew. Each different from the other in way more than just looks alone. Some genetically mutating from birth, others whom started life as human and became something more dangerous and deadly, others well, readers will just have to stay tuned to find out. As this is a re-published series, the entire series is out there available to be read, but I do believe this is its' first time in paperback. So fans whom have already read the series, here is your chance to feel the pages between your fingers of the sexy predetor that any woman would love to take home and keep in their bed, Ricardo Sanchez.

The Collective, a group of humans whom have taken the Meridian treatment, and the ruling class of the Universe. Skylar has been a member of the Corps, a militant sect of that group, for the past two hundred years. Centuries in which she has been mentally connected to the whole of the group, following orders unquestioningly, barely able to even recognize what emotions are her own. So when her Colonel offers her a mission in which she will be on her own, both physically and mentally, she all but jumps at the chance. After-all, what is asked of her should be fairly easy; hire a crew to help her break out an inmate in spaces form of Alcatraz, then betray that crew once all is said and done. Only problem is, whenever something seems to good to be true it usually is, and that is definitely the case here. As she comes closer to her end game, she also becomes closer to the crew, especially one very hot, stubborn vampire, Rico. Now she must ask herself, is she willing to betray them and leave them to their fate?

As a fifteen-hundred year old vampire there isn't much in life that Ricardo Sanchez has not done, besides being a cowboy. What he has never encountered was a woman much like Skylar Rosario; spunky, tenacious, confident, strong, intelligent and most importantly, not easily intimidated. But he knows she is hiding something, something that could put the lives of the entire crew at risk. While he hasn't made many attachments with most of the members, he considers Tanis a true friend, and that is not a word he takes lightly. But the temptation of getting closer to Skylar, a chance to accomplish a task that no one else ever has, and  enough money for Tanis to get her Meridian treatment is just too great for him to turn down. Will he beat Skylar at her own game, or will he end up losing everything in the end?

Full of action, suspense and a story that will keep readers guessing to the end. This is a must read for Sci-Fi fans of any gender, but only the non-squeamish type. Paranormal lovers not quite into science fiction may still enjoy it, though just not as much. Only thing I wish were that there had been more details on what happened to planet Earth, as there was in Book 3. All in all, a very good read.

Betting on Julia Review

Betting on Julia by Nina Croft (ARC Review)
Melville Sisters Book 2
Published August 25, 2014 by Entangled: Covet
3.75 Claws

"In looking for what they both wanted, they find what it is they truly need."

Synopsis -

Small, blonde, bubbly, and with a penchant for all things pink, Julia Melville has always considered herself a nice girl – until she was attacked by a werewolf. Months later, and still in total denial, Julia spends the time between full moons fantasizing that her life is normal. And who could be better to help her with that than her new neighbor, handsome accountant, Sebastian Crane.

For two hundred years, Sebastian, a powerful warlock, has been possessed by a demon. Each day, his soul grows darker, and he knows that soon he will be beyond salvation. But the demon loves to gamble, and he’s made Bastian one final bet—get a good woman to say the words “I love you” and he’ll be free.

Julia wants a normal guy. Bastian needs a good woman. Maybe together they can find something far more valuable…redemption.

Review -

While not being my usual cup of tea, which I'm beginning to see has nothing do with the author (because Nina Croft definitely knows how to bring on the action, mayhem, violence and steam) but more to do with the publisher. Covet is more of a Paranormal Lite. For those readers who would like to try the waters of the Paranormal, but not quite ready to take that full plunge into the darkside. Though most authors fail to grasp what that truly means and write more of a Contemporary Romance where one of  the characters just happens to have fangs or a set of claws. Nina Croft manages to tone the nit, grit blood and gore without losing the full essence of the wolf.

That being said, I like my werewolves strong, dominant, fur flying trying to tear each others throats out, or fucking each others brains out with no compunction or worrying about hurt feelings, at least until they find their soul mates. Not quite the case here. I would not recommend this to die hard werewolf fans looking for that sense of pack life, danger, blood, history, gore and diabolical plots, but, as a good filler while waiting on that next book, like say, Book 4 of The Order or Blood Hunter series, it is a good read.

Bastien has made a bet against anyone in the Supernatural world knows you should not, a demon. But when the prize is his own freedom, to finally be rid of this demon, how he possibly say no. Especially when the task is so simple, "Get a good woman to say, 'I love you'". There is no such thing as simple when it comes to a demon. The woman in question turns out to be Julia Melville, a werewolf. If there is one faction of creatures Sebastien hates its werewolves, the vial beings who caused him to lose his family and the reason he has been stuck with a demon for two hundred years.

Julia has been bound and determined since her attack to pretend that it never even happened. Except for during her FMS, Full Moon Syndrome. Any time other than that Thing just doesn't even exist. Well, her mysterious next door neighbor is making it impossible to ignore Thing, at times making her volatile and others wagging her tail in utter content. Things become even more complicated with the attraction she feels brewing between the two of them, though neither are even looking for a relationship. As always though, what we're looking for is not always what we need. What she's looking for is normal, anything to help her forget what she really is now. Sebastien seems to just bring it to the surface. But is that necessarily a bad thing?

Fun, magical and with a little action thrown in for good measure, Betting on Julia is an enjoyable, wonderfully written, lite read. Though it did end with quite a few unanswered questions; what happened to Sebastiens' daughter, while his wife may have been mortal, his daughter did have his...genes. Those readers looking for a Paranormal Lite with werewolves, this is the perfect read for you.

Death Defying Review

Death Defying by Nina Croft  (ARC Review)
Blood Hunter Book 3
Published February 24, 2014 by Entangled: Select
4 Bloody Fangs!

"Well, this book has cinched it, Nina Croft is definitely now one of my favorite authors."

Summary-

Part snake, part human, and—some would say all bitch—Captain Tannis of the starship El Cazador has one goal in life—to earn enough credits to pay for the Meridian treatment to achieve the immortality she craves. And one last job will get her there. The assignment: protecting the most powerful man in the Universe.

Being leader of the known universe isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. In fact, it sucks big time. And after five hundred years, Callum Meridian, founding member of the Collective, is bored out of his mind. But as things are changing, he’s changing—into what, though, he isn’t sure. Callum is determined to discover the truth, and he’s employed the crew of El Cazador to help him do it.

Not everyone agrees with his plan, though. His own people will stop at nothing to prevent the truth coming out, the Church is taking advantage of the confusion and attempting a coup, and even the crew of El Cazador seem close to tossing him out the airlock without a space suit. But defying death has never been more dangerous, sexier, or more fun.  (Goodreads)

Review -

I love Nina Croft.  Unlike most of today's authors', she does not shy away from sensitive topics or afraid to off a few characters if/when the story-line calls for it.  Granted, when a character dies, it has the ability to bring readers to tears and cause them pause to continue on with the book.  But it is a sure sign of that authors' ability in storytelling when a reader truly mourns the loss of a fictional character as if they were a full flesh and blood human in which the reader had vested interest in him/her.  That being said, be sure to pick a box of Kleenex before you read.

Another subject that I admire her handle on is love; fated vs. true has been one of the biggest controversies in the PNR world for a very long time.  Croft takes on the True Love aspect more often than not.  And watching Callum and Captain Tannis fall first in lust then develop into love was a wonderful thing indeed.  Especially when both are leading figureheads in their own right, neither using taking orders only giving them, its a constant battle figuring out who is in charge.  Afterall, while Tannis may be captain of the ship, Callum is the ruler of the entire Universe.  But when Callum employs the El Cazador's services, well, you know how the old saying goes...."my house, my rules".  Callum is desperate, and determined to learn the truth about what he and his fellow Collective are becoming.  The only way to do that is to travel to Trakis Seven, the planet where very few will travel to willingly when going there is no more than a death sentence.  So, he has no choice but to ask the Renegade crew aboard the El Cazador, since they will take on pretty much any mission, at the right price.  Little do they know that in the end, that price will not be worth what they lose in the end.

All Captain Tannis has ever dreamed of was getting enough money to purchase herself the Meridian treatment.  Seeing as how her greatest fear her entire life has been death, of course she would long for immortality.  After living a life from the tender age of four until seventeen of being experimented on and watching all of her friends and loved ones die since they were not considered human, when she finally escapes her captivity, she can think of nothing more, besides seeking revenge.  And the idea of sex appalls her rightfully so, considering some of those experiments were on a very personal level.  So when her libido finally awakens and her heart begins to unthaw for none other than Callum Meridian, let's just say shes not a very happy camper when she begins putting puzzle pieces together, one being an emblem from the guard's uniform, the initials C.M.  Coincidence??

Full of action, fire power, technology in the future at its best, Croft truly knows her Sci-Fi.  That delicacy where fantasy meets possible reality.  Science at this point can viably put both eggs and sperm in chryo, who's to say a thousand years from now they won't be able to do the same with people?  Or that they aren't already....  And no matter how advanced civilizations ever becomes, you will always have your Zealots believing only one race should be allowed to live.  Enters the Church, its  not a race issue with them but a humanity one.  Those not one hundred human do not deserve to live.  While Callum is away looking for answers, the Church is at bay plotting a galactic takeover.

The only thing stopping this from being a full 5 Fang review is my own fault.  This book CAN be read as a stand-alone, the prologue provide plenty of background information on Tannis, where the reader will understand her ploy.  But....without having read the first two books in the Blood Hunter series' certain aspects will not have the same impact as they were truly meant too.  So readers I deplore you to not deprive yourself the way I did, and begin from the beginning.  Its' like starting Star Wars in the middle of an episode, while you may be able to enjoy it you wouldn't realize why you should care who Anikan Skywalker is.

All in all, Death Defying is truly a great read.

Review -

I had been waiting impatiently for this book to come ever since I read Bittersweet Magic, longing to see what was in store for one of my favorite demons, Asmodai.  I am happy to say Croft did NOT disappoint.

Asmodai has gone by many different names, Ash Delacourt, Demon of Lust, Prince of Darkness, but none does he crave more than the name Father.  After losing the only woman with the ability to break through with black heart, his wife Lily, the only woman's affection he has craved is that of their daughter he believed to be dead, Tara.  But after ordering her best friend to be brutally murdered, successfully, that seems like a pretty impossible feet.  Even after he goes to his best friend Luc, Lucifer himself, to procure a present for her.  A gift that comes with a price on his part they may lead to him falling for yet another female, a frail human woman, something he always vowed he would not do.  And that woman, with her fiery spirit and strictly black and white attitude has a ticking time bomb getting ready to go off inside of her that will cut whatever time they may have shorter than he realizes.

Faith is one of those women that lives in a world with rose colored glasses; everything is black and white, good or bad with no room for nothing in between.  A world where no ghosts or ghoulies exist.  So when she is offered a position at a government facility, by a Priest and ex-Military man no less, a faction called MI13 that is investigating Christian Roth whom they tell her is a vampire, it takes all of self-control to not fall out of her chair laughing.  Though even when undeniable physical evidence is right in her face, she still can't except it, as though an impenetrable wall comes up at the mention of the word Vampire.  A wall that has been there since her mother was murdered and her body found by Faith when she was only twelve years old.   Being forced to take the job, she refuses to spy on her former partner, Ryan, but she may cede to spy on Ash.  After-all, there is nowhere she take the attraction she reluctantly feels for him.  Not when her Government, the good guys, have deemed the people he works for as bad.  But her righteous government is about to do something so heinous that she will have to change the way she view things.

Full of action, heat, lust, violence, intrigue and most importantly characters readers will actually feel a vested interest in, Bittersweet Darkness is a true must read.  Just not if you are righteous, holier than thou, squeamish or believe that vampires should sparkle and Angels only create miracles.  Because in this world, Demons may be the not-so-bad guys and Angels the not-so-good guys.  And I am also happy to say that Croft has proven to be one of those authors with the ability to surprise even me, which is saying something after all the Paranormal books I have read.

Yes, this can be read as a stand alone, though I recommend reading the entire series'.
