"Sometimes in order to win, you have to just step back and let your enemy dig their own grave."

Synopsis -

An unexpected phone call heralds a new challenge for Mercy. Her mate Adam’s ex-wife is in trouble, on the run from her new boyfriend. Adam isn’t the kind of man to turn away a person in need—and Mercy knows it. But with Christy holed up in Adam’s house, Mercy can’t shake the feeling that something about the situation isn’t right.

Soon, her suspicions are confirmed when she learns that Christy has the farthest thing from good intentions. She wants Adam back and she’s willing to do whatever it takes to make it happen, including turning Adam’s pack against Mercy.

Mercy isn’t about to step down without a fight, but there’s a more dangerous threat circling. Christy’s ex is more than a bad man—in fact, he may not be human at all. As the bodies start piling up, Mercy must put her personal troubles aside to face a creature with the power to tear her whole world apart.  (Goodreads)

Review

As someone who has followed this series from the very beginning, I have to admit I was totally afraid of what would happen once Mercy and Adam finally gave in to their desires to be with one another.  So many great series hold so much onto the theme of star-crossed lovers, heated attraction that always just almost comes to fruition but never truly does.  Then when they finally become an item, disaster strikes where they can be together no more.  I am more than happy to say Briggs did not take that route.  Not only are Adam and Mercy stronger and better together than they ever were apart, but Briggs also did not take away anything that made fans love the strong willed Walker.  Mercedes Thompson Hauptman never has been a typical damsel in distress waiting for the Big Bad Wolf to dash to her rescue, nor too stupid to ask for help when needed.  Even if that means asking a Father whom she will never feel she can truly trust.  After-all, they don't call Coyote the mischievous, trickster Spirit for nothing, but his machinations just may be for the greater good, and the proverbial apple doesn't fall too far from the tree.  And Mercy is about to find out that she isn't the only apple that fell.

When we last left Mercy in River Crossed, the Fae had retreated from the human population, the walking stick had developed a mind and will of its own, and a thirst for blood leading Mercy to give it to Coyote for safe keeping, and Mercy realized the blood bond she had with Stephan was still indeed intact.   All of that and more come into play in Night Broken.

Mercy thinks she has it bad enough when gets paid a visit by one of the Grey Lords demanding the return of the Walking Stick, by weeks' end.  No problem, that.  All she has to do is just as Coyote to give it back, which is inevitably easier said than done.  Along her journey to find Coyote, she finds an "Almost half brother" she never knew she had.  Never one to deal with one problem at a time, Mercy also finds herself sharing her home with its previous owner, Christy, Adam's ex wife.  Christy is on the run from a stalker, and who else would she turn to other than her Alpha Werewolf ex-husband?  Just because he has a new wife doesn't mean she can't come home, right?  Well, the master manipulator brings more to their doorstep than just a few jealous bones, but a dangerous stalker that proves to be much more than human, and deadlier than any vampire, fae or werewolf.  A creature so deadly that not even Bran nor the Fae know how to kill him.

Full of non-stop action, surprises, including Tad proving that he is Zee's son in much more than name only, and flying body parts that will literally set you on fire.  This book should not be read as a stand alone, to get the true feel, readers are advised to read the entire series.  Not for the faint of heart, and perfect for those who love that chill up your spine feeling.
