Mind Tamer Review

Mind Tamer by Moriah Densley
Network One Book 1
Published December 15, 2014 by Entangled Select: Otherworld
2 Scientific Stars

"There is a very thin line when it comes to too much information and not enough."

Synopsis -

He's different. And he's definitely trouble...

Lyssa Logan has an uncanny ability to know exactly what you're thinking, and she can solve crimes before they actually happen. Lately, however, she's been having a few issues. Brutal headaches, power fluctuations, possibly losing her grip on reality. Oh, and she appears to have stopped aging... The moment Kyros Vassalos sees Lyssa, he knows she’s one of his kind. No hocus-pocus, no voodoo. They're just very rare "extra-sentient" beings with the extraordinary ability to unlock the full potential of the mind. Now he must teach Lyssa to control her power...before it overwhelms and destroys her. Lyssa is pretty sure Kyros is trouble. Hot, leather-pants-wearing trouble. But she's running out of time. And once she steps into Kyros's world, there's no going back... (Goodreads)

Review -

It took me a while to get this particular review posted due to the fact that in many ways I truly did like this story and the extreme potential it carried. But, had it not been for prior knowledge in not only music, having formerly been a violinist myself, and in science I would have been lost before even reaching the middle of the book. While some aspects of this read can still be enjoyed without certain knowledge, all of the musical and scientific terminology makes for some things lost in translation. So while music theorists and scientific gurus will fly through the book and appreciate it being that the language is second hat to them, others may find it not only distracting, but just a little too much.

Lyssa Logan is what is known as an extra sentient creature, her powers coming out in every note and vibration of bravada coming from her violin. She does not truly know what she is, orphaned at a tender age she doesn't remember anything of her mother and never knew who her father was. Her only comfort she has through having her uncanny abilities of reading others minds, is the solace of her violin. Getting lost in her music is all the comfort she has ever truly longed for. Until the sudden appearance of someone else like her makes her abilities not only stronger, but also debilitating. While discomfort is brought about due to this stranger, he also brings tranquility, the knowledge there are indeed others much like her, and a longing for something other than an object.

Kyros Vassalos has lived for centuries working on his theory of quantum physics, and saving as many extra sentients as he can. But while he is out to save them someone else seems to always be hot on his heels trying to destroy them. Staggeringly shocked when he finds Lyssa he makes it his vow to ensure her safety, for female extra sentients are more rare than a black diamond. And upon discovering more and more about her and her powers, he begins to not only fall for her, but to realize whom who father must be as well.

With the potential for being a dramatically good read with the everlasting debate between science and magic all of the terminology and focus on the scientific aspect of things made it fall flat where it could have been invigorating. If there was to be a more scientific focus, instead just using words and numbers, vibrations and light, why not focus on the origins of what these beings are and where and/what the origin of these fantastic abilities they possess come from; literally hypnotic music putting you in whatever mood the artist is playing, beserkers with the strength and rage of legends, telepathy, telekinesis, so many other aspects where the science of things could have been stretched.

So all science geeks (which is a term of endearment because I am one too) and violinists will enjoy this more than anyone else looking for a Paranormal or Science Fiction Romantic read to get lost in and fantasize about. Hopefully the next book will prove better than the first because it does pack a wallop of potential.

Queen of Wands Review

Queen of Wands by Katee Robert (ARC Review)
Sanctify Book 2
Published June 24, 2014 by Entangled Select
4.5 Galactic Stars

"They say keep your friends close and your enemies closer.  So what do you do when that enemy is family?"

Synopsis -

When Jenny O’Keirna gets a chance to slip her older brother’s leash, she jumps at it, even if it means playing babysitter to a too-smart-for-his-own-good inventor. She’s not expecting the attraction that sparks between them—or that Sanctify is just as desperate to take him for their own.

Never in Mac Flannery’s wildest dreams did he imagine Jenny would be the one sent for him. He sees beyond the mad grin the sister of Hansarda’s new king presents to the world, and that combination of vulnerability and wicked humor is a siren call he can’t resist.

But Sanctify is always three steps ahead of them. On the run—and unable to keep their hands off each other—Jenny and Mac devise an insane plan: kidnap the leader of Sanctify, and stop this war once and for all. Unfortunately, they’ve just played right into his hands…

Review -

I have to admit, the title kind of threw me off a bit.  Looking at the title, Queen of Wands, I pretty much assumed that she would turn out to be a Sorceress or Witch with like wicked, mad powers.  Turns out the reference was to Tarot Cards'.  Though I was a tad bit disappointed that was not the case, I was not disappointed in this read, other than wishing I had read book 1, Queen of Swords. In retrospect, had I read the first I would have realized the title was referring to the tarot card.  Robert has a true knack for pulling readers in from the very first page, keeping them on the edge of their seats til the very last.

After being what feels like being held prisoner for her own good, Jenny O'Keirna jumps at the chance to get away from her overbearing brother, and the planet he now rules, Hansarda.  Afterall, all she needs to do is pick up some genius that Sanctify's new leader is trying to get their hands on, secrete him away to a private location, during which find some time to get herself laid and have a good time.  Those plans are shot right out the sky from the moment she sets foot on the planet Mac Flannery is on and she learns that not only is Sanctify one step ahead of her, but Mac is much more than just some geek playing around with his gadgets.  He turns out to be tall, dark and deadly, having killed more than one of the men who have come to kidnap him without shedding even a drop of blood.  But the real danger is the effect he seems to have on her and the fact that he sees right through every single one of her masks she puts on for the world.

Mac Flannery is more than happy to stay secluded away from the entire universe, creating as many and more advanced weaponry he  can to use against Sanctify.  So it is not an easy feat being forced to call for transport off of the planet, until he learns who has been sent, Jenny O'Keirna.  A very complex of a person, a puzzle in which he has a great desire to solve.  He just never planned on that puzzle turning his entire world upside down.  And for their adventures to take him to the very planet every male of every species grew up having wet dreams about.  On their attempts to flee Sanctify, it always seems Sanctify is three steps ahead of them.  The reason why ends up being a betrayal that will cut Jenny bone deep in the end.

Seems that the ties that bind are a very deadly thing in this series'.  As it turns out, the new leader of Sanctify has a personal score to settle with the ruling family of Hansarda, and hates all diviners to the very marrow of his sole.  Readers will be taken aback upon learning of his familial ties.

Non-stop action from one page to the next, characters to both love and relate to and more than just a little bit of bloodshed.  A read to be enjoyed by both paranormal and Sci-Fi fans alike.

Dream Huntress Review

Dream Huntress by Michelle Sharp  (ARC Review)
Dream Seeker Book 1
Published June 23, 2014 by Entangled Select
3 Dreams

"More of a Romantic Suspense with a Paranormal aspect, but still a beautiful love story."

Synopsis -

Detective Jordan Delany has a gift. Through her dreams, she connects with dead victims of violent crimes. Her isolated life as a drug cop is perfect for hiding the freakish visions, until her newest investigation has her posing as a cocktail waitress in a down-and-dirty strip club. When she’s saved from a drunken customer by a handsome stranger, the heated chemistry is exactly why she intends to keep Mr. Arrogant at bay. But learning he’s the new bouncer for the corrupt club she intends to bust just might be the one reason why she can’t.

Tyler McGee suspects a drug ring operating out of the local club is flooding the streets of his hometown with heroin. Determined to get answers, he plays the part of a fallen cop and lands the job of head bouncer. What he discovers is that the club owner isn’t the only deadly obstacle he’s facing. His attraction to an intriguing cocktail waitress with a penchant for danger just might kill him first.

Review -

To say this is a Paranormal is a bit of stretch for my tastes, and probably to true Paranormal lovers, especially ones following this site.  While the main character does see ghosts in her dreams, either showing how they came their untimely death, or preventing the death of those they love, there wasn't enough emphasis on that fact until towards the end.  So much more could have been done with that aspect.  And for someone whom she was close to not to believe her when she was a young child and had a prophetic dream that could have prevented the death of those they both loved dearly, even though they too experienced those same type of dreams so they knew beyond a doubt they were real, was more than a bit of a far stretch.  If anything, it should have made that person even more-so open-minded to the words of a child, that most would take for nothing more than an imagination gone wild.  The ending is the best part of this book, and the events leading up to it.  The beginning and middle are written well, just not well enough to keep readers glued to the page.

The synopsis above pretty much gives readers the gyst of it.  Growing up in such isolation due to the violent tragedy that strikes her family, and everyone thinking she is crazy when she tells them of her dreams, leads Jordan Delaney to become a cop using those dreams without telling anyone of them.  With her gift, she is able to help solve plenty of murders that would probably otherwise have gone unsolved.  When two fellow detectives are slain while working deep undercover, she is bound and determined to bring the drug cartel responsible down to their knees.  Which leads her to meeting Tyler Mcgee, someone else with a personal vendetta against the Drug Lord.  Only when they meet, she has no idea that the ex-cop is indeed on the up and up.  When he continuously tries to per-sway her to quit her "job" as a waitress, she thinks it is because he is in on the drug business as well.

The two make the perfect pair as they each are kind of hiding the exact same thing from one another.  And when Tyler makes her for what she really is, it is truly the highlight of the book that will probably put a stitch in readers sides from laughing so hard.

This is not a book for PNR lovers, there isn't a whole lot of action, no gore and definitely no chills up your spine.  For readers who like to just test the waters of the supernatural, this may be a perfect fit.  The love story here is truly a beautiful one with two people who truly deserve one another.  As long as readers go in knowing what to expect, they will see it as the decent read it is.
